Running the programme always made his computer whirr. It was soothing somehow, filling the silence, especially when he was sitting, as now, on the hard kitchen chair with the clock on the wall barely visible in the early morning darkness.
Past three AM.
On the computer screen the small infrared figure shifted in his bed, leaving warm orange and yellow imprints on the bed sheets and pillow that faded to violet and blue farther away from the heat source. Heero watched the movement intently, waiting for something more... when nothing else happened he allowed a small breath and relaxed back into his chair.
A creak from the floorboards of the room upstairs let him know that Duo was awake, possibly a bad dream, perhaps nothing more than a bathroom break. Soft padding on the stairs a minute later told him that it was the former and he glanced away from the recorded figure sleeping on his screen to look at the door.
Duo appeared shortly, sleep tousled and groggy still.
“...H’ro.” he greeted around a yawn.
Heero nodded, returning once more to his computer. Grabbing a pan from the cupboard Duo lit the gas hob and pulled the litre bottle of milk from the fridge, momentarily sending a blast of cold, frosted, electric light in Heero’s direction.
“Want one?”
“Hm...hot chocolate?” Heero asked.
“Of course.”
He pushed his empty mug in Duo’s direction in silent consensus.
Picking it up Duo gave it a swill under the tap and placed it next to his own on the work-surface. Leaning his hip against the washing machine he gave the milk a quick stir and looked at Heero.
“What you doing?”
The figure on the screen shifted a little again and Heero delayed his reply for a second while he watched. “Nothing.”
“Oh?” Duo’s reply was airy, “Nothing seems to keep your nights pretty busy lately.” he commented, ladling out the spoonfuls of chocolate powder.
Milk heated up enough, Duo filled the mugs, passed one to Heero, and sat down in the seat next to him, near enough to see the laptop screen clearly. He took a sip of his milky drink, sighed, then said.
“You want to talk about it?”
Heero didn’t answer and the room fell into companionable silence for a while as the hot beverage worked its magic. It was a good five minutes later and Duo’s eyes were beginning to droop when Heero chose to break the quiet.
“Bad dream?”
Duo shrugged, “Not too bad really, just a bit disorienting I guess.”
“Hm.” Heero sipped his drink, looking thoughtful. “What do you dream of?”
Duo thought for a while before he answered. “Things that are important to me," he announced seriously. "People I’ve known, cared about, people I’ve not known, people I’ve killed. The usual.”
Another “Hm.”
“Why’d you want to know?”
Heero didn’t reply and once again the comfortable hush coated the room. A slight shifting of the figure on the screen caught Heero’s attention once more but it came to nothing and he settled back into his chair with a frustrated mien.
Duo watched him quietly from over the rim of his mug. Throwing back the dregs in one decisive moment he stood up, swilled his cup out, and stood it upside down on the drainer. Heero listened to the quiet, sticky sounding footsteps as they moved over the linoleum... making a mental note to wash the floor in the morning.
They stopped directly behind him and he exhaled softly.
“You know.” Duo’s hand had moved to hover over his left shoulder, not touching, just close enough to heat the air between their bodies. “Just because a person doesn’t remember, it doesn’t mean they don’t have nightmares. It seems to me if you were so interested in finding out if you dream or not you could always try asking the person you share a room with. They must know you better than any camera system after all.”
And with that he left the room, throwing a casual, “Night.” over his shoulder as he did so.
Alone once more Heero watched the little recording for a while longer. The floorboards creaked above him again and, coming to a decision, he reached out and powered down his laptop, plunging the room into the grey semi-darkness of encroaching dawn. The immobile recording had told him nothing he didn’t already know anyway.
He might have known Duo would understand.
Standing up, he stretched the kinks out of his back and rubbed the grit from his eyes temporarily.
The bedroom was dark when he arrived in the doorway but he knew Duo was awake. He therefore had no qualms about breaking the silence one more time that night... it was time to ask.
“Duo...”

The bit about the footsteps on the linoleum, and Heero making a brief mental note about cleaning the floor...it's little bits like that that I really find help paint the picture so much clearer. His awareness of Duo's proximity with his other senses is very clear...you can feel the beginnings of the spark between them, and where they are right now is a stage of friendship more binding than any PWP could hope to capture.
Heero acknowledges, belatedly, that he should have known that Duo would understand, and he doesn't just recognize that he should have known...he does something now that he's accepted that much.
I know, I could probably write a review of the things I liked that have almost as many words as the ficlet itself, but there's just something about this one that keeps pulling me back.
Probably my shameless Heero worship.
Gah, now I know I'm tired. Yeah, now I see the pun. Ha ha ha, yeah, I know. That pun has been beaten to death. But I digress...
It's weird, some of the little things, like the sticky floor, I added in on a whim, but they seem to work for atmosphere. LOL to be honest, with the haste I finished it up last night I'm just happy that it actually kind of shows what I wanted it to, and it didn't go wandering off on some bizarre tangent.
I know this isn't technically a romantic fic, but I'd still love to archive it at my website, Moments of Rapture. Would you consider that? I'd just need your email addy for feedback, and if you're archived anywhere else.
Btw, I love your bio. I'm a pairings monogamist, too. 1x2x1. No one gets between them for me. ^___^
My archiving is patchy and I haven't had anything hosted anywhere in a good while lol but mainly I've used http://www.fanfiction.net/~natea and a few people have hosted some of my fics, like Aenai ai, http://aenai.steelsong.com, The Sanctuary, http://www.personalescapes.com/gundam/g
My email is natea4@yahoo.com
Thanks again for asking! I'm on a high now lol, which is probably not a good thing so close to bedtime here.
:D Another pairing monogamist... I really can't see them with anyone else anymore. The instant something hints that way in a fic it's a case of 'recoil in horror get it away get it away'

I think I love you for saying that. It's just so nice and comforting to know that someone else feels that way. I thought I was the only one. You've really made me feel a whole lot better. Thank you so much!
LOL I might be blinkered and close minded when it comes to pairings but it's 1x2x1... enough said.
LOL I Love the icon by the way... one of my favourite Heero pictures too, although I like the whole thing, not just that one specific part.
It was something along the lines of...feeling close to the characters in a way that makes it anathema to see them with anyone else. I know that it's exactly why some people ridicule us - "they're just fictional characters, get over it" - but if I didn't care about them, why would I read (or write) about them at all?
By the way, I'm so pleased that this ficlet will be on MoR! I adore anything that shows Heero's depth - and even more when it shows a connection with Duo without portraying Duo as a whore in need of saving from himself. There's something special about the two of them when it's clear that they are both strong, yet vulnerable in subtle ways.
I'll just go over here and melt into a puddle of happy goo now.
(Also very much fond of that pic of Heero!)
I think there comes a time when the characters become not just people you read about, but people you care about. For me, they represent a lot of how I see myself and my husband. They really are special to me in a way I can't explain to most people. Nitid once told me that if you spend enough time caring about the characters, that somewhere, in some universe, they'll become real. I think maybe they are now. ^__^

Honestly, I think most people can only really understand it when it happens to them. I've had a couple friends tell me recently that they never knew how I felt until they felt that way about a pairing in another fandom. I guess some of us just feel that closeness to the characters better than others. I like to think we're the lucky ones.

For me, it's the trust. The way they are able to confide in and depend on each other shows me that there is a lot of depth to their relationship. At the very least, it speaks to me of a very strong friendship. I just like to see it as being a lot more than that. ^_~
*waves her 1x2x1 flag proudly*
Heero and Duo especially, have so much more to them than what's on the surface... probably why I hate the fanon stereotypes so much now. Duo is not a giggling femmy idiot and Heero is so much more than a robotic abuser. There's a difference between being quiet and being emotionless after all.
Gah *gets down from soapbox* sorry!
There's a great balance between them I think, polar opposites on a lot of things but still connected... almost like a seesaw, the same deep down.
But I like your soapbox! Yes, the fanon of GW has some horrible stereotypes in it. I've lived through abusive Heero, whore Duo, silent Trowa, angel Quatre, and justice boy Wufei. It makes me glad that I'm such a slow reader, because I usually had enough good fic to keep me occupied that I didn't have to read much bad stuff. ^_^

A lot of people call them opposites, but I think they're more complimentary. Heero's opposite is Relena, IMO. One of the reasons I could never see 1xR working is because they are too opposite. I think their differences would drive them apart. *just can't imagine Relena being able to overlook and/or deal with Heero's violent past* I could see Relena throwing Heero's past at him any time they argue.
I can see Heero and Duo working out, mainly because they share experiences. I think Heero and Duo would both have a lot of adjusting to do after the wars, and having someone who went through the same thing would be a great help. They have common experiences and interests, even if their personality types are different. They really do compliment each other very well.
Okay, my turn to get off the soapbox. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir, too. ^___^
Definitely! Like the old nursery rhyme 'Jack Sprat would eat no fat, his wife would eat no lean, and so betwixt them both you see, they licked the platter clean.' They seem to play off each other's strengths and bolster up their weaknesses at the same time. 1xR to me is nothing but a fairy tale ideal. I can't remember who said it but there was a saying floating around the 'net once upon a time 'Obsession and indifference do not equal love' lol.
It's a shame that people seem to forget this now in favour of looks.... Heero and WuFei should be together because they're both Asian. Duo and Quatre both have large eyes etc... and can't even read the threesomes or HORROR the 1x2x3x4x5's out there. LOL more like 2 in the middle and all the others radiating out from him... poor uber uke Duo.
All I know is that when I see a series and like it enough to want to read fic for it, I'm usually looking for a continuation of what I saw in the show. All of the main pairings I follow (except for one) are what people would consider traditional (popular) pairings. IMO, they have the most support from the shows they're in. That's why I gravitate to them. They have to have the most fans for some good reason, right?
Like you say, they're a main stream couple for a good reason! :D
There is actually one or two authors that makes me read 1x2x3 (because the plots are so good!), but it always gives me a weird feeling after...
Anyway, the end of this fic was so... soothing, I mean, for Heero. I love how you didn't bother to explain extensively every little thing, things are just throw in a very subtle, very natural way in the story, the reader can "see" the emotions without you explicitely telling them. It's all very simple but very meaninful, with so little you managed to say so much about these two!
I really love this!
*hugs*
P.S.: Sorry to butt in XD
